Themed ‘Global Design, China Power,’ the 2023 World Industrial Design Day & Global Design Leaders Summit took place at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning. It was hosted in conjunction with the World Design Organization (WDO), China Industry University Research Institute Collaboration Association, and Shenzhen Futian District People’s Government. The grand opening on 29 June 2023 marks the first time this key event has been held in Shenzhen, positioning the city as a crucial hub for global industrial design. Co-organised by SIDA and the Shenzhen New Social Stratum Association, this year's series also commemorates the 15th anniversary of Shenzhen as a UNESCO City of Design and the 15th year since the founding of SIDA.

During Priestman’s keynote presentation at the Global Design Leaders Summit, titled ‘The Future of Sustainable Transport’, he remarked: ‘I have been working in China for many years, and I currently hold the position of Global Creative Director at CRRC, where I am responsible for designing trains in China, including the A380 series. This is very meaningful to me because these design projects represent the crystallisation of collective wisdom from the entire team, which can also be seen as a symbol of the intelligence of the Chinese people. We focus closely on public transportation, as it is crucial for a modern city like Shenzhen. I believe governments and people around the world are striving for a better life, and public transportation plays an important role in this.’

The event had a line-up of distinguished speakers and panellists, including Masayuki Kurokawa, a celebrated architect and industrial designer whose work spans multiple disciplines; David Kusuma, President of WDO, renowned for his contributions to global design policy; and Zhao Xinli, an academic at the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Senior Advisor to the China Institute for Science and Technology Policy at Tsinghua University. Together with other participants, they explored the intersection of technology and creativity in industrial design, envisioning trends and opportunities for the future.

Launched in Shenzhen for the first time, World Industrial Design Day was an important moment for Chinese design to integrate into the world stage with more openness and confidence.
