Paul Priestman Keynote speech ‘Design, Moving and City’

At the Shanghai World Design Cities Conference (WDCC) in 2022, Industrial designer Paul Priestman, the founder, chairman, and creative director of PULI innovation, delivered a keynote speech titled "Design, Moving and City." In his speech, Priestman shared his extensive experience in designing complex transportation projects and explored how design can innovative cities.

As the Global Creative Director of CRRC Sifang, Priestman is not only an internationally renowned transportation designer but also the first Western designer to hold an important position in a Chinese state-owned enterprise. He showcased his collaboration with CRRC Sifang on designing China’s first high-speed railway, addressing the profound impact of design on people, stating that good design inspires people to use better transportation.

He emphasised the importance of design in solving urban and social issues, commending Shanghai's excellent practices in bicycles and electric vehicles. He also highlighted the proactive approaches of many cities such as London, New York, and Paris in tackling environmental challenges, reducing pollution, and improving quality of life. Priestman regarded these changes as shining examples of urban planning and design. He expressed great optimism about the prospects of bicycles and electric vehicles in China, believing that Chinese cities have the ability to lead a greener and more sustainable future.
